21 Weeks: Look Mommy, I'm dreaming!

Baby:
  • Is about 10 1/2 inches long, head to toe.
  • Passes time by sucking her thumb and even opening and closing her eyes. And you know, elbowing me in the vital organs.
  • Is like, kicking for serious now, and the movements cannot only be felt from the outside, they can often be seen.
Me:
  • Getting accosted in public with unsolicited belly rubs and unsolicited pregnancy advice. I’m not sure which is more annoying.
  • Oh, so THREE of the pregnancy books I use to compile these bullet thingies mentioned that I should  be feeling downright awesome and fabulous right now. Not too big and uncomfortable, lots of energy, able to sleep through the night without peeing, etc. If that describes you, well…LA DEE FRICKING DA. HOW LOVELY THAT MUST BE FOR YOU.
Your beautiful little miracle-gro baby will be putting on a full ounce and a half this week (and weighing up to 16.5 ounces), but that’s just the beginning! Within the next five weeks, they’ll really be packin’ it on! For now, we’re pleased to report the addition of rapid eye movement (REM) a key component to any healthy baby’s sleep schedule. While in the dermatology department: their thin soft skin is very red, rather translucent, and a bit wrinkled. Not to worry, it’s not a premature aging disease. It's just their clever little body setting them up with extra space that will smooth out once your little one starts packing on the baby-fat. That won’t be for a few more weeks, though. So for the time being, your munchkin is still a little lean mean growing machine! The beginnings of what is commonly called “brown fat” is just starting to fill in to help your baby retain some body heat, which is crucial as they’re not yet capable of regulating their own body temperature.

Light Show

Last month, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Tokyo City Hall) was illuminated with an amazing light show to coincide with a conference of representatives of 11 major cities in Asia. Here’s what it looked like:

The psychedelic illumination is the work of Japanese digital artist Akira Hasegawa. Over the past few years, with his project Digital Kakejiku (D-K), Hasegawa has been similarly illuminating various large buildings in Japan and around the world.

Digital Kakejiku is a technique of projecting random slow-moving sequences of abstract patterns on large areas of building surfaces. At a glance, the patterns look still, but when you look away for a minute, the image is completely transformed.

Sixty projectors were used to illuminate the Tokyo City Hall building.

Playing hunter is fun - I'm going to try to make this a daily thing before I get too pregnant to chase after them.

Balloon

Bear Ol' Bears

I feel like a balloon that is slowly but steadily being blown up.

Last night my stomach skin felt like it was being stretched. It was uncomfortable. Most of the stomach stretchy feelings that I've had so far have been in my muscles. The way my tummy aches makes me say to *H* , "My uterus is growing again." But this feeling of my skin stretching is just weird.

I got worried last night, thinking, "I must be about to get stretch marks." And then in an irrational fit brought on by exhaustion, I thought, "Or maybe my skin will just split right open. The baby will hatch out of my belly like a chick out of an egg. Has that ever happened? I bet it has. I should Google it. Wait. Do I really want to know? Probably not. I should just go to sleep."

Decisions...

The possibilities!

Zoka Coffee

Was a bit hungry, so I stopped in this coffee shop for a quiche and caffe latte. It's been a while since I last had a latte, so this was a little treat.

20 Weeks

Baby:
  • Is as big as a butternut squash, or as long as a banana, or possibly a carrot. I am getting the sense these comparisons are not really an exact science.
  • Will be measured head-to-toe from this point on, instead of the head-to-rump measurements we’ve used so far.
  • Has a heartbeat that can be heard with just a regular old stethoscope now and not just the fancy doppler.
  • Is swallowing and practicing other digestive skills, and can now produce meconium, which is essentially prenatal poop that sits in the bowels during pregnancy.
Me:
  • Is HALFWAY THERE HALFWAY THERE HALFWAY THERE!
  • Seriously. I'm halfway through this pregnancy, which might bring to mind such deep thoughts like: “Yay!” or “Uh-oh” or “Whoa” or “Must. Organize. Kitchen. Cabinets.”

This week you're carrying about 10.5 inches and 10.5 ounces of solid baby-miracle-goodness! Their little delicates bones continue to ossify and toughen while their itsy bitsy finger and toe pads are finishing up. Your little monkey now has teeth buds, although they’re hidden beneath the gum line. And finally! Their limbs have reached their relative proportions—no more alien baby! Their cute pink lips are more defined, and might be helping out in a bit of prenatal thumb-sucking. If you have a little boy, then their tiny testes are descending, though they have not yet passed the abdominal wall. What’s more, eyelashes and eyebrows are also visible. At this point, your little one really looks like a miniature baby—and we do mean miniature as your little swimmer currently weighs a mere eighth of their final birth weight. With half the pregnancy behind you, the most significant gains are yet to come!

TiLAJ - Senbei

Things I like about Japan

When it comes to loving sembei, I've been a decidedly late bloomer. For a  time, I associated sembei with an overpowering baked rice, soy sauce and fishy smell. I've learned that there is a cornucopia of sembei flavoring out there from brown sugar to corn soup to garlic to wasabi.

Kinako mochi

Kinako Mochi Choco

Kinako mochi, little ‘one-bite’ delicacies from the local convenience store.

They are a soft pounded glutinous rice with toasted soybean flour topping in kinako-flavored white chocolate.
